Golden Valley in Mist

One of the best things a photographer can do is to have their images made into prints. Thats when an image truly becomes art, when you can see it large and on canvas, the vibration emanates from the physical presence of the print. This weekend is the EAST of Asheville Studio Tour and I’m excited to once again be a part of this wonderful tour. This is a time when folks come out to enjoy the drive, to discover art, to meet the artists and chat leisurely with the artists who are so often, as art creation is often a solitary act, holed up by themselves creating art. For the visitors coming out on the tour, I have heard nothing but raves from anyone who has taken the opportunity to do this. So if you’re local, please drop by! You can download the guidemap at www.eaststudiotour.com. I’m #F5 on the tour. See you here!

Love Your Work — Business Portraits http://catvibe.com/2012/loveyourwork-businessportraits/ http://catvibe.com/2012/loveyourwork-businessportraits/#comments Thu, 05 Apr 2012 10:53:46 +0000 Catherine Vibert http://catvibe.com/?p=199

Wendy Outland of Who Knows Art

I first met Wendy Outland of Who Knows Art when I first began a business to sell my artwork. Wendy is an artist’s motivational and brass tacks art business building consultant in Asheville, NC. If there’s anyone who loves her work, it’s Wendy. She is a muse and a blast of inspiration. We hit it off really well right from the start and ended up on the dance floor shaking our booties in short order. So it was a great honor to be able to do Wendy’s portrait for her business page. It’s a thrill to see it there now, and let me tell you, we had one heck of a good time during the photo shoot!

When Wendy sees art she loves it makes her hair stand on end.

In fact, one might say we had a hair-raising good time!

Fun during a photo shoot is what it’s all about, and one of the reasons I love photography. A creative business photo looks for something beyond a portrait. It’s a portrait that shows what you love about your work. Thinking about the best way to portray that is part of the brainstorming we do before the photography. Whether done on location or in the studio, the elements are to have fun, to express what you do, and to look fantastic. That’s what we strive for!

Coltraine wanted in on the photoshoot.

In this shoot, we went to Wendy’s place of business in the River Arts District in Asheville, NC. She has a sweet office location at the Riverside Studios, which turned out to be an awesome place for photography. First, we relaxed at a local pub with a brew while waiting for the light to get that nice late afternoon warmth. Then, back at the studio gallery, we had fun chasing the sunbeams that poured through the gallery windows and fought for camera attention with Wendy’s canine companion, Coltraine. Wendy is posed here in front of paintings by Asheville artist John Stennent.

Brian Kintner on his mandolin

One of my favorite things to do is to photograph people in their natural environments, doing what they love to do most. I photographed Brian yesterday for an article I’m writing for a local newspaper. Aside from being an outstanding electrical engineer who can do just about anything with a wire, Brian is a lover of bluegrass music. I thought the shot of him playing music would probably be more interesting than a shot of him installing photovoltaics. The shot is beautiful even without the processing, but I loved the way the colorizing accentuated Brian and his audience of daffodils.

Brian has the honorable distinction of having been the original organizer of the Asheville drum circle at Pritchard Park back in 1998 — a weekly event that now draws thousands, brings all kinds of economic benefits to downtown Asheville, and draws tourists from all over the country. I loved interviewing and photographing him yesterday and am looking forward to writing him up!

Affordable Wedding Photography in Asheville http://catvibe.com/2012/affordable-wedding-photography-in-asheville/ http://catvibe.com/2012/affordable-wedding-photography-in-asheville/#comments Sat, 25 Feb 2012 19:44:10 +0000 Catherine Vibert http://catvibe.com/?p=151

Marni and Kevin

Dear Bride and Groom,

Of all the things to spend money on at your wedding, nothing could be more important than the photography. What you will still be looking at in 50 years are the pictures from your wedding. You want them beautiful and professionally rendered. Hopefully they will be well protected in a beautiful leather bound album so that it will hold up from all of the passing around that book is going to experience over the years.

Wedding Photography Sale

My price for basic wedding coverage — 3 to 4 hours coverage with one photographer (me), a CD of edited screen resolution images up to 200 images, and a credit for 5 8X10 or 8X12 shots — is only $950. This is less than half of what the average cost of wedding photography is in Asheville. Act quickly though, this price is subject to change as the dates fill up for 2012.

Albums, and print resolution CD’s are available á la carte or as part of a more comprehensive package, as are specialty canvas gallery wraps and other stunning presentations of your wedding photos. There are affordable packages for more comprehensive coverage as well, including another photographers and a videography option.

Bridal, boudoir and engagement portraits are also available á la carte.  Contact me to discuss options for your situation and needs.

The Best Wedding Photographers in Asheville

2012 is my first full year in the wedding photography marketplace, although I have 40 years of photography experience. I have chosen to pursue weddings because I love everything about capturing the joy and love that is such a prevalent part of the wedding day. It’s just something I love to do. However, If you are looking for the best of the best in talent and with years of wedding photography experience, I have some recommendations, some of the most talented photographers in the area:

 Parker J Photography

Honour Hiers Photography

Regina Holder Photography

JKay Photography

I wish you the best in making your wedding plans, and I hope to be a part of your most-special day.

All the best,

Cat Vibert

Me, at the opening, talking to a photo enthusiast.

And just like that, the opening of The Click! Project came and went…did you miss it? What a fun night it was, so very crowded and full of people who were interested and excited to be there. The food was magnificent, the wine was flowing, and all in all, it was just a great night. Luckily the show remains until May 22 and there are a bunch of workshops. Mine will be on March 25 (Following the Sun), and April 29 (Travel Photography, Deepening the Experience Abroad). You can read further descriptions and sign up for them here. But hurry up, both classes are filling up quickly and there are only 15 slots.

The Awakening

Next week is the opening of The CLICK! Project at the Conn-Artist Gallery in Hendersonville. I was asked to be a part of this project last summer and as it was the first time my photography was invited to be shown in a gallery, I jumped at the chance with glee! It turns out to be so much more than just an opportunity to hang work.

The project involves 14 fabulous photographers from the Western North Carolina locale. Some are professional landscape photographers, and some are photo enthusiasts with a flare for amazing work. We got together and began to plan our show. We picked Valentine’s Day to open because it just made sense, we are doing this because we love what we do. And this is what we want to show the world. So 14 photographers will open on February 14 for 14 weeks. And each of those weeks will include some awesome workshops. I’ll write more about mine later down the line. For now I want to focus on the opening and what I wanted to show!

Now I’ve been a photographer for a long time and I have a large amount of fine art photography adorning my hard drives that I have yet to print. And yet, for all that work, I knew what I wanted to hang in this show needed to be fresh. And besides, with a brand new super nice camera in hand that I just came into possession of in early December, I wanted to hang pictures that used the capacities of the new rig! Enter the Sunrise Project.

I’m an active member of Google Plus. As a result I’ve added a major amount of knowledge about photography to my repertoire. It’s hard not to there with such a thriving photography community. One of the members of G+ invited me to participate in a 365 project. That’s a year long commitment to take a photo every single day. Well I already do that, I wanted something a little more challenging and that documented some kind of every day activity. To be able to chart it’s progress for an entire year. I also needed something that wasn’t going to lock me into a location, in case I ever wanted to leave home. What better thing than the sunrise? It is always there, whereever I am, every morning without fail. Although sometimes obscured, that part suits me fine. I like shooting pictures of fog and rain! Plus those days give me the opportunity to do something different.

In any case, as I started to say before I got all tangental, we of The CLICK! Project are opening on Valentine’s Day and are having a reception. If you are in the Western North Carolina area, we’d love to see you there. Come say hello! You can find out all about the other artist on The CLICK! Project’s web page. I can’t tell you how awesome these sunrise shots look all printed up on large canvases. You’ll just have to come in and see for yourself!

Underground Steam in Nepal ©2007 Catherine Vibert

I posted this photo a couple of years ago on my writing blog and I thought I’d bring it here because I really love this shot. Plus it reminds me of being there. Nepal is very dear to my heart… I posted the photo along with this poem:

The catalyst’s eye
Forges a burning cleft
As the raptor feeds
On carrion lies

The crystalline gaze
Breaks placid serenity
Sinking through the battlegrounds
And blood stained festering scars

It falls

And falls

And falls

And lands

Smack into the middle of everything

The dam cannot keep the crows back

Rippling
From the center
Gentle waves become a tsunami
Forging rivers
In the long dried
Ancient cracks
That lie
Beneath the stone
